OPAH Justice

They showed up for us. We’re showing up for them.

Ordinary People Acting Heroically (OPAH) is a volunteer run nonprofit organization that provides emotional and financial support, with love and care, to people who have been imprisoned for nonviolent attempts to save life on Earth. We help our friends to survive and thrive while in prison, and healthfully adjust to life outside when released.

We are rooted in…

Our demand for climate action…

We’re headed towards a precarious future. Scientists expect the world to blow past two degrees Celsius in the next fifteen years. Big Oil executives are responsible for this crisis. Politicians are not doing enough to address climate change. In many cases, they are furthering the crisis, including Presidents Trump, Biden, and Obama.

The urgency of the justice problem…

Prison populations are disproportionately comprised of African American and Hispanic men, especially men who dropped out of high school. Incarceration is associated with poorer outcomes for children and families. Our justice system preys on the poor and being a prisoner is expensive. The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate of any independent democracy on earth. Peaceful protesters get lengthy prison sentences while Big Oil executives roam free.

Name

The Opah is a rarely seen colorful fish that lives in the deep ocean. It’s red, orange, and bright vermillion, with big eyes encircled with yellow. Like the volunteers at Ordinary People Acting Heroically, the Opah fish stays out of the limelight, but nonetheless serves in the web of life. Opah fish are capable of traveling long distances, often in response to changing oceanic conditions such as temperature. So go OPAH volunteers, who do what is necessary to support those who choose to pay a great cost to protect us all.
